Erasmus mobility in the Netherlands
We are happy to share the story of our student Peculiar from her Erasmus mobility in the Netherlands!
She studied at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences. Hear her honest experience!
“At the beginning of my Erasmus mobility, we had a three-week intensive study program. During this time, my daily routine usually started at 9:00 in the morning and ended around 17:00. The classes were very practical and interactive, which was quite different from what I was used to before. Typically, we had two to three lectures per day, and each lecture lasted around three hours with short breaks in between. During these lectures, we were often given class assignments that required us to work together, discuss ideas, and collaborate with other students.
At first, it was a bit challenging for me because I was one of only two international students in the class, while the rest of the students were Dutch. In the beginning, it felt a little difficult to relate and communicate with everyone, but over time we became more comfortable with each other, and I gradually got to know my classmates better.
After the three-week intensive program, we were each assigned a major individual project. This part was honestly a bit scary at first, because the project involved working in partnership with a real company. I remember thinking, “Wow, I have never done something like this before.” However, it turned out to be an amazing learning opportunity. While working on the project, we were guided by supervisors who supported us through direct contact or through Microsoft Teams messages. I also had weekly meetings with my supervisors and the company’s representatives where I presented the progress of my project and explained how the work was developing.
My project focused on object detection using full-body X-ray scan images. The goal of the project was to explore how artificial intelligence could be used to detect objects within X-ray scans, which has potential applications in areas such as security screening and image analysis. Working on this project allowed me to apply what I had learned in the minor “I’m AI – Data & Image” and gain practical experience with real data and real-world challenges.
Communication during those meetings made me nervous at first because everything was new to me, but with time I adapted and became more confident. Each month, we were also required to write a portfolio and a technical paper about our project. We submitted these to our supervisors for feedback, which helped us understand how to improve our work and what areas we should focus on more.
Although it sometimes felt like a lot of responsibility, I now realize how valuable that experience was. It gave me insight into what real work experience in a professional environment can look like and helped me develop many practical skills.
At the end of the project, we had the opportunity to present our work during a poster symposium. I presented a pitch about my project in front of a jury and many people who were interested in the minor. My minor was called “I’m AI – Data & Image.” It was a really exciting moment for me because I was able to talk about something I had been working on for months. Receiving positive feedback and having the opportunity to interact with professionals made me very happy and proud of the work I had done.
Outside of my studies, Erasmus also gave me the chance to explore the Netherlands. Since my mobility was based in Leeuwarden, I was able to visit other beautiful cities like Amsterdam and Groningen. Experiencing the culture, walking through new cities, and discovering different places made the entire journey even more memorable.
While I did not make a very large number of friends at university, I connected closely with two classmates whom I spoke with often. However, I built a wonderful community through my church, where I met many amazing people. That is actually where I met one of my closest friends during my Erasmus period. We spent a lot of time together exploring the city and sharing experiences. If not for Erasmus, I would never have met such wonderful people who are now part of my life.
It is difficult to choose just one most memorable moment because the entire experience was full of meaningful memories. I would say that every day brought something new to learn—both the good and the challenging moments shaped the experience. Looking back now, I truly see it as a special period in my life.
I would absolutely recommend Erasmus to other students. It is not only about studying abroad but also about experiencing new cultures, meeting people from different backgrounds, and learning how life can be different in another country. For example, I had to adjust to Dutch culture, which was interesting and sometimes funny. And I cannot forget to mention some of the Dutch food I tried—oliebollen and kroket were definitely among my favorites! If anyone ever visits the Netherlands, those are a must-try.
Overall, I am very grateful for this opportunity. I would like to sincerely thank Vilnius Business College for making this experience possible, and also Mindaugas for helping make the process smooth and supportive. I am also thankful for the friends I made during this journey who made my time in the Netherlands truly memorable.”
